Early Christmas Delivery

Meet Holly Brooks Herndon - the newest addition to our family!!! My brother James, and his wife, Lynne, welcomed Holly in the wee hours of the morning on December 23. She weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces! Big brother Crockett is excited to have his new little sister. He is really enjoying watching Thomas the Train in the comfort of the bouncy seat more than Holly is right now! LOL! This is one of the favorite images that we captured yesterday while Granddaddy was holding Holly during one of her many naps. She has started practicing her "smile for the camera" so she will have it down perfect when she gets a little older!

Christmas has been good this year for us! We started our celebrating on Christmas Eve and wrapped it up on Sunday with our extended families. Too much good food...but we aren't complaining. Our goals for the new year are probably the same as many of yours - take better care of our bodies, try to be healthier, and get more exercise. If we can just accomplish these few things, 2009 will be a huge success!

Today is the final day of 2008! It is hard to believe that January is about to roll around again! We wish everyone a safe, wonderful, and prosperous New Year!

It's The Most Wonderful Time

Hello again! It seems like it has been 100 years since we last blogged! Well honestly - it really does feel like we have stuffed about that much photography into that last 30 days! Alas, we are so thankful for everyone who has come to see us before the holidays to get Christmas cards, Christmas portraits, family portraits, babies and children's portraits, and (this brings us to this week's feature image) SENIOR portraits!

This is Shay - and she is a DOLL - as you can clearly see... Shay and I went all over the place scoping out only the coolest places to grab some quick outdoor shots for her senior session. The scarf was super cute not to mention WARM...and you won't believe this...she eventually changed into SHORTS!!! for another outdoor site we visited. We worked very fast...and then showers started so we moved it indoors. Congratulations to this special athlete - she will be attending an awesome university on a golf scholarship next year!!! Go Girl!

We are rounding out this week distributing photos and Christmas cards that we did for our holiday special...if you missed it, you missed out...they are simply beautiful again this year. All the moms that we'll see over the next couple of days are going to be delighted at how stunning the portraits look! We met some new folks which is always fun and exciting, and we hope they will come back soon!

Gosh! - Only 24 More Days!

It's Hard to Believe! Only 24 more days until Christmas! This fall and holiday season has been busy, busy, busy - and we are going to be playing a lot of catch up this week in order to get most of our proofing sessions done so orders can get back in plenty of time for frame selection and of course - WRAPPING! These wall portraits are going to be BIG surprises for some families...and I can't wait to hear about the responses!

We were proud to photograph a gorgeous marriage renewal ceremony in Murfreesboro this past Saturday; Claire and Kendall renewed their vows and partied the night away with all of their friends and loved ones! Claire is obviously a terrific planner...all of the details were superb...right down to the glittery white butterflies in the table centerpieces! You will definitely see an image from this event appear on the blog soon...

Above you see a photo that looks like it comes straight from a Gap ad...this is Sydney and Mason. Their mom (and Sydney, too!) came by last Wednesday before we closed for the holiday to view the proofs and check out our gallery. She had requested that we do some images that were "outside of the box" - and we believe they really are! There are many, many terrific images that preserve this neat time in their family's life!!!

Three of My Favorite Stooges

These three cutie pies are more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Notice the clown in the middle with his tongue out. I laughed so hard during our Christmas session on Tuesday that tears rolled out of my eyes and down my cheeks. We went with simple photos since the card will be a super-decorative foldover that holds FIVE different images. This image was early on and mild compared to some of the other hilarious shots I captured to be forever emblazed in the minds of me AND their mom. So much fun was had that we eventually had to rip off the last of the roll of white background paper!!! It had all it could take, so we swapped to another color mid-session.

Tuesday was indeed a great day as we finished up the very, very, very last outdoor session with a senior from FCS and headed inside for the winter. My fingers were numb on the shutter after only 45 minutes, but the images are spectacular. She is going to love, love, love her senior images!

The Holiday Special starts tomorrow and runs through Wednesday, and the appointment times are well-booked. If you are wanting to catch a great deal on holiday photos, give us a call at 615.444.6322 - and we will fit you in early next week. Thanks to everyone who will be coming in until Wednesday to experience the craziness as usual!

Glistening Gold

Today I had the chance to drive up to Smithville for a portrait that will be used on a Christmas card very soon! If you know where Snow Hill is going through Dowelltown...man, it is breathtaking in nothing but gold right now...and I surely wasn't expecting to view something this magnificent after a day of rain. Our leaves in Lebanon are starting to hit the ground fast. As much as I had hoped the camera would see it like I did - this image still doesn't do the scene justice. I had always thought that the reds and oranges were my faves, but this was literally a sea of gold with the sun barely kissing the leaves making them even more luminant. WOW! I just wanted to share it with everyone who visits the blog...so enjoy! One verse of scripture that I think of often when I see something as breathtaking as this is I Corinthians 2:9 - "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him."

I Wish You Many More

Today is John's birthday!!! We have had good times and lots of fun around our house last week and over the weekend. For those of you who don't know John, he is an awesome husband and father. I know that sounds cliche, but if you could hear me say it - I would shout it from the mountain tops. Peyton and I wouldn't know what to do without him; we both love him so much and know we are so blessed to have him! John has been a tremendous support to me as a husband and a friend since I started Harper Photography three years ago. He is my behind-the-scenes right & left-hand man. He is the one who builds displays, paints those same displays, fixes broken toys that I use for props, loads and unloads, mends easels, helps me dream, keeps my checklist checked before I head out the door to meet a client, the list never ends. He really is the very BEST. And I will readily admit that I couldn't do it without him. I tell him all the time I hope he lives to be 100. Happy Birthday, Sweetheart - I love you! And I wish you many, many, many more wonderful birthdays.

Speaking of a special day - it is also my parents' 35th wedding anniversary today! Isn't that such a coincidence that my husband's birthday and parents' anniversary is on the same day? Congratulations on 35 years, 4 kids, 1 grandson and a granddaughter expected in December, plus a step-grandson, too! Happy Anniversary to Mom and Dad - We love ya'll!!! Thank you so much for all you are to ALL of us...

One more week of Fall Family sessions...and what a bummer for this week's appointments - rain is sadly forecasted...we are hoping for an hour of no rain every afternoon to get everyone finished. Is that wishful thinking or what with Wednesday being a 70% chance? Every year we cram as many sessions we can into a couple of tight weeks; the leaves are already starting to disappear from the tops of the trees now...winter will soon be here. Especially after 33 degree weather this morning. Thank goodness the sun is shining brightly so maybe it will warm us up today!

Make New Friends...But Keep The Old...

I had a connection with these two before I ever set eyes on them for the first time; I went to high school and graduated with both of their parents! It seems like forever ago now, but when we all got together again...the friendships rekindled so easily. These are the Davenport kids, and I had a fantastic time with the entire family in October. They make my job so nice and easy! Even though I am sure there may be some sibling rivalry at home, they got along so well during our Fall Family session. We had fun even though we all thought the mosquitos were literally going to carry us off! Thank goodness someone invented bug spray!

We have more Fall sessions this week and next week before we conclude for the season. It is a real blessing to have such warm weather this late; the first year I ever did outdoor sessions it was cold and miserable by November 17. The sky was gray and the trees were bare. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything will hold out for all of you who still have appointments booked before then!

Our Holiday Christmas Special starts November 21 - everyone who books before this Saturday, November 8 will get a studio upgrade as an early bird bonus. Call 615.444.6322 for an appointment!

Baby, Baby

This is little Judd! His mom & dad just got to take a peek at their newborn and family proof session... Judd is their first baby, and it was such a pleasure meeting all 3 of them for the first time and being able to record just how tiny and precious he is right now. After all, time goes by quickly & it is easy to forget how little they once were...he did fantastic during the session and gave us time to get some images sleeping PLUS some awake. A special thanks to Judd's parents for selecting us! We simply adore all of the beautiful newborns!

This week is our Halloween Spooktacular, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone's costumes! There are a few slots still open in case you have been thinking about bringing your trick-or-treaters - this is the best special we offer all year - don't miss it!

Wild & Crazy Weekend

This weekend was more than wild and crazy! We photographed the wedding of Susan and Jon at the beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Eastwood Christian Church in Nashville, and then everyone got busy shaking it and taking in the grand reception celebration at the Global Cafe. This was our first reception there...and it was totally a cool place to have one. Mac Griffin from In Any Event spun the records...and as always he was over the top! If you need a good DJ...he ROCKS! Above you see one of Susan's bridal portraits we did several months ago at the Belmont Mansion.

We also saw lots and lots of our clients at Oktoberfest sponsored by Wilson Bank & Trust. The weather was gorgeous! If the weather is great and all my buddies come to see me, I consider it a huge success. We are already starting to get some calls from new clients; thanks to all of our current and potential clients for checking out our display!

Fall Family Portraits are in full swing...and we will be doing our Halloween Spooktacular next week! Come and see us if you haven't already signed up!

Good Time

Alan Jackson's latest hit goes something like this...G with an O, O with a D, T with an I, and M and an E... And what a GOOD TIME I have every time I get together with two of my newest friends! Sunny and her mom came in over the weekend to view the proofing from their extended portrait session that we did to celebrate her senior year in high school at DCA. These photos were so stunningly beautiful that they knocked my socks off, so I was beyond excited to see how they responded! Of course, they LOVED them!!! This was as much fun for me as it was for them the day of the session...we went out to a horse farm that belongs to one of their family friends...and we were all over the place catching all kinds of fabulous shots! We all had our favorites, and all of them were different... so thank you so much to Sunny and her mom for giving Harper Photography the awesome opportunity to participate in this much FUN!

This weekend we will be having a vendor booth at Oktoberfest plus a display inside the bank to celebrate this year's theme! We are looking forward to seeing all of you there; our location has moved to the football/soccer field behind the bank. Bundle up first and then come on out to see us!

The Perfect Portrait

If photography judges ever took one look at the above photo, they would surely rip it into shreds. The reason I have titled this blog "The Perfect Portrait" is because of how the photo makes my heart feel rather than all of the composition and technical aspects. You can see the grass outside is blown out and yellow with no detail. It's what is on the inside that matters to me.

This is Mr. Franklin. I grew up and met him through First Baptist Church in Smithville, and he is a soft spot on my heart without doubt. I went to college and lost touch; however, I reconnected with him about 8 or so years ago. My Grandpa and Granddaddy have been gone a long time, but Mr. Franklin is like a granddad to me. A few details about Mr. Franklin - he will be 95 at the end of November, he is a veteran who fought (and SURVIVED) on the beaches of Normandy, he really, really loves other people, and his sense of humor is unmatched. He grows a large, beautiful garden that is kept completely weed-free and shares (BIG time) with anyone who stops by to visit. Before the summer ended, he said that he wanted me to come in late September to photograph his grapes when they ripened. So...I did...and I wouldn't have missed it. When I got there, I think we talked and ate more grapes than I took photographs (note what he's doing in the photo)! He will even share his secret for the best way to eat them. They were simply delicious, and I have some really nice colorful photographs to share with him. It is a treat for me every time I pull in his driveway.

If there is someone that you love and haven't seen in awhile, make it a point to TAKE TIME for a visit. It will warm your soul better than hot chocolate ever could...

Precious Moments

Introducing Cason! We were so delighted to meet his family and record such precious moments of this little newborn. The entire session was fantastic; I could tell immediately that these photos were going to be treasures...and they definitely are! Thanks a million times to Cason's family for choosing Harper Photography for such a super special occasion! We really loved this little fellow!

I would be remiss if I didn't share what a spectacular date night I got to share with my husband on Saturday night! We are coming up on our 5-year anniversary in a few weeks...and since my weekends are booked until mid-November, we decided to treat ourselves to something special. We dined at Morton's on Church Street first, and it was over the top! We had eaten at Morton's in Atlanta about a year or so after we married; we have never forgotten what a special treat it was. If you are looking for a very romantic place to spend a little $$ on a really nice dinner, try Morton's...you will not leave disappointed (Note: make sure you call ahead for a reservation!). After dinner, we went to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center to hear part of the Pops Series with Mary Wilson. She was one of the Supremes with Diana and Flo, and man she knocked it out of the park. She looked great and sounded even better! The symphony itself was unbelievable as well. The venue was perfect because it has a quaint feel, and everyone can see the stage. It was the first time we have been able to go there, and it was worth the price of admission for sure. So...if you feel like getting dressed up for a classy night on the town, try going to the Nashville Symphony if you enjoy music! And thanks to my awesome husband, John, for a fun and memorable evening painting the town RED!

Taking Care of Business

Well - I balked on posting twice last week like I thought I could! I never made it back to the blogspot after the first time! It was a terrific week; I went last Tuesday night to see David Jay, a TOTALLY ROCKIN' wedding photographer from CA. He has started speaking in various cities on what he has labeled his Freedom to Succeed tour. It was a lot of fun, and I definitely got some cool new ideas. Click on his name above to link to his site...his work will totally blow you away. He does lots of destination weddings, so he travels and really enjoys shooting nothing other than weddings. We were able to meet with one of our wedding couples to plan their album last Friday, and it is going to be simply GORGEOUS!

This week is chock full again! Getting proof deliveries done plus some sessions thrown in...we have a very exciting location this weekend with a senior. She has been wanting some unique senior photography that stands apart from her peers, and she has come to the right place! Above you see one of the sessions that we are delivering this week - Delaney! She is a complete cutie-pie. Her short & sassy haircut and polka dot shirt really show how fun and easy to work with she is. I know her mom is stoked about seeing these proofs. We had a great time outside in the private garden, and Delaney really loved seeing the koi pond. I am not sure whether to be glad or sad that summer is coming to a quiet close...

Sweet Sixteen

It doesn't get any better than this...here you see an orange furball that has been near and dear to me since I was 19. He goes by lots of nicknames: The Big Orange (go vols!), Orange Pumpkin, and my personal fave is the Notorious T.I.G. His given name is Tigger, and he turns 16 this month. It was love at first sight the first time I saw him (he was already nearly two), and not long after that I brought him home to my parents' house without asking permission (I guess this is where I should say thanks mom & dad for not making me take him back!). He may have a slightly ornary personality as John and Peyton will honestly tell you, but he is my sweet kitty nonetheless. Last night before bed, I was working on my laptop and going over notes when he decided to join me. We normally don't let him just lounge around up there because he is so furry, but on occasion I will let him sneak a nap. His tendency is to rest on whatever it is that I need, and so here you see him stretched out on my binder...and I couldn't resist grabbing the closest camera and getting a quick shot. He is beautiful for sure... There are days that I look at him after all these years (the whiskers are getting gray and he keeps dropping weight), and I think to myself what a physically beautiful creature he is. Before John and I met, he was my constant companion and roommate...and I will always love him for it.

Last week we got some over-the-top gorgeous images from the sessions we booked. Every single one of those sessions was so enjoyable! I will try to post again this week to show you all some of those images! It is awesome to be able to work with the nicest people...thank you to everyone who made last week so terrific!

ZZ Top - Live in Milwaukee

Last week my husband, John, took a vacation trip with 6 other guys to the 105th Anniversary of Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He left on the motorcycle last Monday and got home yesterday. It was a well-deserved trip for him as he has really worked hard this year and needed a good getaway...

Soooo-what did all those bikers do at the celebration? There was a H-D museum, lots of checking out cool motorcycle stuff at the dealerships, and concerts every single night. On Thursday night, they got to see Sugarland and Kid Rock. Friday night was ZZ Top; I could tell they loooooved ZZ Top - who wouldn't? - they are legends after all. The grand finale was Bruce Springsteen on Saturday night. My stepson, Peyton, just started college. He said, "Man, Dad is having more fun than me this week!!!"

I know the question that some of you are probably dying to ask...and yes, I do gear up and ride the motorcycle with John sometimes. So watch out for the motorcycle riders when you are on the road! It might be me on there! LOL!

Babies All Around

Isn't he beautiful? Meet Holden...his mom and big sister brought him in for a newborn session recently. This morning it was wonderful to be able to share the proof portfolio with his family...we created some really gorgeous portraits of this special time in their lives.

It must be the season for babies! We have scheduled several sessions this week with new moms! It is so exciting to meet these little ones for the first time and get to know each family. One of the best parts of this business is getting to meet new faces. If you are a current client and know someone who is looking for a portrait & wedding photographer, keep in mind that we send awesome referral credits to our current clients as a way to say thanks!!!

So what else is new at Harper Photography? It is hard to believe Labor Day is MONDAY; it seems like one week ago was Memorial Day. It was so nice to see lots of you at the Wilson County Fair! It was definitely a success, and we had a sign up sheet for those interested in our most recent addition - a newsletter. In case you didn't know, we started the first of August sending out a newsletter to all of our clients via email. This email will keep you up-to-date on the latest and greatest at Harper Photography plus some photo tips that you can use at home. If you didn't get the August edition and would like to sign up, just go to the Contact Us page on harperphoto.net and shoot me an message to add your name!

One last note before we sign off the blog for this week - anyone interested in fall portraiture needs to call ASAP. The dates are narrowing down to a close...so if you'd like one done this year...no kidding...HURRY!

Only Four Fair Nights Left!

We have seen so many of you at the Wilson County Fair this week - too many to try and list!!! We have loved it. Thank you so much for scouting us out to say hello...it is such fun to see everyone enjoying our county fair AND the beautiful nighttime weather we've had since last Friday. It has definitely been a juggle keeping the business side of things operating and also staying out late every night, but it was been worth it! Before the week passes by, I want to send a shout out to my wonderful fair assistants who have kept me company at the booth this year: Mary Jo, Fran, and Sara. Hugs & Kisses to my girls!

We didn't schedule many sessions this week on purpose because we always want to be focused mentally and physically when it comes to your professional photography...so in lieu of a client shot, we snapped a few night shots of some things always seen at the fair after the sun went down last night especially for those of you who may not get a chance to attend. Don't judge the quality as much on this one - I took these with our runaround point-and-shoot camera. I just cannot bring myself to take any of the studio cameras out in the hustle, bustle, and dust! And who wants to fight cleaning dust out of a camera anyway - yuck.

We've got some catching up to do the rest of this week and next week, and then following Labor Day we will be right back on track and getting ready for our busy autumn and holiday seasons!!! If you want to get in on the photographic fun we'll be having then - CALL EARLY!

Come & See Us August 15-23!

It's Wednesday already, and this week is really just getting started for me! I just got back today from the TPPA Annual Convention where I was able to soak up lots of new ideas and hear some fantastic speakers like Kirk Voclain from Louisiana and Stephanie Clark from Kentucky! Look out, world - Harper Photography is getting ready to take it up a few notches!

We are thrilled to have a booth again this year at the Wilson County Fair; we will be setting up tomorrow and Friday preparing to see all of you in the crowd! I have an exciting new way to show off your portraits called gallery wraps, and WOW! I got to open them from the lab this afternoon, and it was like having Christmas all over again. They are SPECTACULAR! These displays are awesome canvas portraits stretched around a wooden frame ready to take home and hang...no framing necessary! I even have some in neat designer colors that the moms are just going to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Speaking of moms and their babies, check out Ashton in this precious portrait. I can hardly believe it has been a year since she made her big debut; we had a great time getting in her final panel session last week. Thanks to her entire family for choosing Harper Photography!

Prince Charming Wears Overalls!!!

Yesterday we met with Kai and his mom to do our first outdoor session together! Kai has come to the studio for different specials and a studio session, but this was awesome. He was definitely more in his element being outside with nature and getting the chance to show me he is all boy! I couldn't have had more fun capturing his handsome smile! And let me tell you - he is quite comfy on his side of the camera as you can see in the photo above. I cannot help but love it when the clients his age show up ready for action! Close to the end we were laughing and cutting up with each other when he looked up with those big eyes and said, "Am I your favorite one?" He is sooooo sweet! I will definitely be looking for Kai when they visit the Wilson County Fair!

This week we have had more studio sessions than outdoor sessions due to the hot weather! It has been a very good week this week, and I am looking forward to all of the learning and meeting other photographers at the state convention early next week. Then of course the fair starts on the 15th - and I am really, really, really, really hoping for cooler weather!

See you soon!

Eliza Trashes the Dress!

We went to the home of Eliza recently to do some super cuuute photos of her in her new red tutu to celebrate her 4th birthday. This was definitely not the tutu I was picturing before I got there! It was so darling because it was long and flowing, and you can bet she was loving it...

After we did a few photos in some different places around their farm, I had to talk (in code) with mom to see if she would let her jump off the diving board in one of her play dresses. After Eliza kicked her feet poolside a few minutes, the red tutu was already wet about 4 inches up. Soooo, we went for it! You could see the excitement in Eliza's face as I prepared for the big shot! This is the resulting photo you see above with Eliza mid-air above the blue pool water.

Trash the Dress is the latest trend in wedding or prom/senior photography where you just don't care what happens with the dress...swim in the ocean, jump in the pool, sit on the pavement, get dirty, anything goes! This session was so much fun; I think I was more excited than Eliza! Knowing the pressure is on - and you only get once - definitely adds that element of excitement!!! Give our studio a call if you'd like to take the leap and do something really fun like Trash the Dress!

Let's Fly Away!

Over the weekend, we delivered a stunning wall portrait of one of our June brides, Jessica! Jessica and Roth got married June 28, and it was definitely an elegant event. The doors leading into the church were fully adorned with magnolia, hydrangea, and tons of other florals and greenery. The reception at a separate location looked like a fairytale with round tables dressed up with centerpieces composed of bright gerbera daisies and foilage in super tall, slender, clear vases. As the couple left the banquet hall, everyone blew bubbles and released dozens and dozens of white balloons into the blue evening sky. Roth had one of the coolest groom's cakes we have ever seen - an airplane floating in the clouds - which happens to be very appropriate for an aviator.

Also, don't forget about gift certificates especially with fall and the holidays approaching so quickly! We had a group of siblings to purchase a terrific gift on Saturday for their parents' upcoming anniversary; you can get these custom (hey...you already know we don't do generic!) gift certificates in any amount. I am looking very forward to meeting the entire gang and enjoying the time while we shoot some formals and fun shots to preserve this special time!

This week continues our busy summer as we schedule print deliveries, online proof deliveries, and also the presentation of the proof portfolio and online images to another wedding couple. If you know a friend or relative getting married, be sure to send them our way for a fantastic referral credit to our studio. Who doesn't like beautiful portraits?
Stay cool, everybody!

100% Boy

Saturday we were able to meet up with Jack's mom to deliver his proofs. This little tyke is soooo adorable you just can't stand it! His mom, dad, and I chased him all around during our photo session 2 weeks ago. The result was very natural and tons of his cute expressions were captured like the one above. I couldn't resist this one, and I knew that his mom would recognize this as one of his signature looks. I hope they get to come and see me again soon! It was definitely my pleasure working with them.

We are still working nonstop on wedding proofs and albums trying to catch up from the summer rush. Most folks have no idea of how much work actually goes into the post production side of wedding photography. My goal is for all of my brides to feel like Harper Photography never missed a beat, and I strive to have the wedding day images to prove it.

On top of everything else, August is not going to slow down for us. We have a wedding the first weekend, a convention the second weekend, and the Wilson County Fair will rev up on the 15th. We are planning our displays and booth details right now, and it's going to ROCK! We love what we do, and hopefully it shows each time we meet a customer and have the opportunity to record all of the special times that eventually make a lifetime.

Poets & Pirates

WOW! We have had a blast over the 4th of July weekend. I guess you could call it a mini-staycation! Friday night we went to Nashville for dinner at Kobe Steakhouse and then followed up by heading downtown to see the grand fireworks display. Mayor Karl Dean said from the Riverfront stage that Nashville has been rated the 2nd best fireworks display in the nation! Is that awesome or what? And let me tell you...the fireworks make your chest thump every time one transcends into the sky. It was simply magical...

I love all kinds of music; my ipod is filled with a varied collection from one end of the spectrum to the other. But because down deep I really am a country girl, Saturday afternoon we headed downtown again to see Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney at the Poets & Pirates concert at LP Field. WHOA! The sound was incredible, and the view was not too shabby either! Keith Urban really rocked it...we could see camera flashes going off all over the place when Keith took the stage. And when KC made his grand appearance, the girls went CRRRAAZZEEE! It was so, so, so fun!!! Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland made a guest appearance and sang "Stay" with KC. It was such a blast that I think we could have stayed and partied till sunrise with 49,000 of our closest friends!!!

Gypsy Lady

This week will be full of working on wedding and portrait session proofs even though it will be a short work week due to the holiday on Friday! I am looking forward to a few days off to be with family and friends...

Yesterday I went outside to get a couple of random shots for another project. Since I had the camera, I got to take advantage of getting a few cute photos of our #1 all time favorite backyard beauty - Gypsy. It is a true delight to go out and spend time with her since she is quite the charmer...and of course the smartest dog that ever lived...LOL! She even knows how to smile for the camera!

Happy 4th of July everyone!!!

Beautiful Baby Brother

Today we shared the session proofs with a terrific family who just welcomed a beautiful new addition - a bouncing baby brother! Every time we do a newborn session either with the baby alone or with the parents, it is so touching and heartwarming to look at this precious new gift from above. This little fellow was so strong for 15 days! I was totally amazed by him... I have one photo that is unbelieveable (it will probably end up in my gallery)!

This weekend we have another wedding to shoot for a bride and groom about 45 minutes away. The church is beautiful, and so is the couple. This couple came in for their consultation and it was so comfortable meeting and talking with them. I feel so blessed to be able to help them record this special day in their lives. They have planned a wedding that is definitely going to be classy all the way...

Isn't She Lovely?

Sorry to all my friends and clients who have checked in on the blog to no avail! I have been behind on the blogging; the photo sessions are going great. I have been to so many exciting places over the past week - Leipers Fork, Hermitage Golf Course, and Belmont Mansion. You wouldn't believe the photos that resulted from these beautiful locations! I will post them eventually, but two of them were bridal portraits so we have to be extra careful not to let the images of the brides in their gowns creep out until AFTER the weddings! We have also had lots of fun with engagements, families, and children!

Isn't the photo above precious? We got to see Miss Ansley again at the end of last week. She and her mom came to place their final print order. You've never seen bigger bluer eyes than these; we had a terrific session last time. We have already scheduled a date to shoot her one-year portrait in July at a private garden.

Hot, Hot, Hot!!!

Not only has the weather been HOT, the photos have been too! Check out Jordan! Jordan's parents wanted some neat photos to remember her 16th birthday with her new red convertible. We took a ton of different poses, and they just picked out what proofs they wanted printed this afternoon.

Which brings me to another TOTALLY HOT deal! Now that we offer online client proofing, we have lowered the sitting fee for singles and small groups to $69 for those who would rather use this option! Hey, just put the extra savings in your gas tank. Plus it's an AWESOME way to show off your session photos with your family and friends! With the online proofing system, you can see your photo turn instantly into black and white or sepia with one mouse click.

If you know someone who has been putting off great photography because of the price, send them our way - and we will send YOU a referral bonus!!!

Congratulations Hillary and Brett!

It's probably not hard to figure out that the wedding season is upon us! We are getting ready to present the proof catalog and images to one of our couples, and we just finished shooting another wedding this past weekend. It was the first time we have done a wedding at the First United Methodist Church here in Lebanon, and it is nothing short of one spectacular church! There is definitely a feeling of beauty and reverance when you enter the sanctuary.

Above you can see a wide angle shot right after Hillary was escorted down the aisle to her groom. The stained glass is breathtaking for sure. We had a great time with all of the wedding party, and just want to say thanks again so much for allowing us the pleasure of being a part of your wonderful day!

Celebrating A Milestone

Our family will be celebrating a milestone tonight as Mr. John Peyton Harper walks across the stage to receive his diploma at the Wilson Central High School graduation ceremony. Even though this is a happy occasion, I know that there will be some tears shed by all of us from the pride we feel in having such a terrific son and grandson. And so, in an attempt to not get mushy, I have selected a few quotes that I have personally loved for quite some time and keep them at my desk for inspiration.

"If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is good." - Dr. Seuss

"We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand... and melting like a snowflake." - Marie Ray

"A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

We love you, Peyton, and congratulations! We are so proud!!!

Happy Birthday, Preethi!

This Sunday, May 25, is the birthday of a very good friend of mine, Preethi. I met Preethi about 4 years ago when I worked for Deloitte. She lived in India, and I was of course in Tennessee. We made an instant connection after I sent a team photo by email; it was the first time she had a chance to put faces with names from the other side of the planet. She almost immediately sent a photo over email of herself along with her new husband, Abhi.

Sometimes we get gifts unexpectedly. And Preethi has been and still is one of those gifts to me. I often think that we are the same soul in 2 different bodies in 2 different places and 2 different cultures. I salute Preethi for being the young woman she is - strong, beautiful, and courageous. She is the kind of girl that doesn't mind making waves and taking chances. I am blessed to call her a great friend. And even though we don't get to share chic flicks or long lunches, when we do have a chance to catch up on the phone, it's like we never missed a beat at all. Happy Birthday, Preethi, from the Harpers! We love you!

Little Miss Personality!

Today we had the privilege of photographing Ella and completing her one year panel. Every time before, she has been really gentle and calm. But TODAY, she showed up overflowing with fun! We laughed so much chasing her around the camera room, and her big brother Matthew helped entertain. You can see the personality ooozing out of her!

If you are interested in seeing any of our baby panels, all you need to do is make an appointment to come by the studio to view our displays. They grow up so quickly during the first year. We do mostly custom work in any shape, frame, and matte choices you desire! Just call 444.6322!!!

Beautiful Outdoor Weather!

Hello again everyone! Sorry for the delay in posts; life has been crazy again. It seems to stay that way around here. I was checking everything on the website this morning and realized I have fallen behind on posts. The lastest BIG news is a change in my email address. From now on, please use tara@harperphoto.net.

We have seen what seems like a gazillion babies, children, and families lately! A lot of the families and children have been shot outside in this beautiful spring weather we have had over the last couple of weeks. Weddings are also keeping us busy as we have 3 dates booked within 6 weeks. We are looking forward to working with the May couples to make their dreams come true with terrific wedding photography and gorgeous albums. If you know of a new bride, please have them contact us for a no-pressure wedding photography presentation. During the presentation, each client gets to personally view our albums, our printed portraits in a variety of sizes, and several different slideshows.

We are thinking about offering a neat special for the first time this year in July or August since the weather will be so HOT, so be on the lookout!

Now back to work!!! C ya soon!

It's a Big Day on Saturday!

We have had a great week this week taking appointments, previewing sessions, and fulfilling orders. BUT - the best part is going to be the big wedding on Saturday for Aleesha and Roderick! I am really looking forward to seeing the day unfold for this super special couple. I already know Aleesha will be stunning because we finished her bridal portaits and have one ready for an easel at the reception. And...I have heard through the grapevine that Roderick will be dressed in a khaki tux instead of black (like most grooms are choosing for destination weddings). It will be soooooo handsome on him! We have a lot to do to get ready for all of those special moments, and I want to thank them for the 1000th time for choosing us!

Happy Birthday, Matthew!

I just want to take a second to recognize and wish a very happy birthday to my youngest brother, Matt. He turned 23 on the 18th! Our family had a great lunch together yesterday, and we had lots of goodies and CAKE!!! Now that he is a proud homeowner, he got lots of neat stuff for his newly remodeled home. Don't blink!

DCHS Scholarship Recipients

Last week I was privileged to be able to return to my former high school (DeKalb County) where I grew up in Smithville, TN. The occasion was to photograph 3 graduating seniors that have received $500 each for a scholarship provided by Mr. Warren L. Johns. In the photograph above, you will see the 3 seniors in the front, Bert Driver from Bert Driver Nursery in the back left, and Lori Barnes, the DCHS counselor in the back right. Bert Driver Nursery is donating trees in honor of these students to be planted on the school campus, and the photograph you see here will be published in full color close to Mother's Day on the back page of the Middle Tennessee Times newspaper. Mr. Johns provides these scholarships in memory of his mother, so the print time for the newspaper display is very fitting. Congratulations to all of these students...and the world can be yours if you will pursue it!!!
Wow! This past weekend was so busy with family portrait sessions despite the crazy, cold, windy weather! We had a great time with the Hayes family Saturday evening, and the Franklin family on Sunday afternoon. I will have to admit though we did have to dance in and out of the rain on Sunday. Mrs. Franklin didn't mind much because she has been waiting to get her kids and grandkids together for this portrait for OVER A YEAR! We made it finally!

Peyton Harper Wins FFA State President!

Congratulations to my stepson, Peyton Harper! He was selected Wednesday, April 2, as TN State President for FFA in Gatlinburg at the FFA State Convention. Peyton competed against many other candidates for this huge honor and responsibility. He will have an awesome year traveling the state and representing TN FFA with 7 other state officers. In July, Peyton will get to travel to Washington, DC along with the presidents and secretaries from other states. In addition to this, he won first place in the state for his proficiency which was based on his assistance with his Grandpa's boer goat herd.
We are so super proud of him that we cannot even say it enough! He has put in a lot of hard work this year toward achieving this goal, and we are certain he will represent well. John and I would really like to tip our hats to his wonderful advisors at Wilson Central who have really been diligent in coaching him along - Benny McDonald and Pam Walker.

Shout Out to Stephanie!

I received an email today from one of my very good friends that I do not see as much I once did because we used to work together. She could lead the Harper Photography Encouragement Club if there was one - Stephanie! Stephanie is somebody who knows how to give me a good pep talk when I need it. Don't you just love the people in your life who are great at encouragement? I am telling you - if I am low on praise, I know that all I have to do is talk to Stephanie.

Anyway, her email was saying that she loved the blog even though she generally doesn't like blogs. AND - that she had passed my new site on to another friend. How awesome is that? I told her she shoulda left a comment! lol!

Stephanie brought her two kids before Easter to do the Fun with Bunnies special. I used to see her every day, but now its more like once or twice a year. We were able to have dinner together after the session and catch up on the latest and greatest. Getting together with my good friends is something I wish I could do more. It is so fun! Thank you, Stephanie, for being someone I know that I can count on!

Last Weekend At Montgomery Bell

I mentioned in an earlier post that I attended the TPPA seminar last weekend at Montgomery Bell State Park. It was a great weekend! I got to see a lot of my fellow photographers who also have businesses in TN and hear some speakers share ideas. It was really a pleasure and also an honor to hear Richard Ramsey of Bartlett. He is extremely accomplished in his skill and also in his artwork; he has received SO many awards for his photography. If you ever see it in person, you be able to tell immediately that this man is gifted...

I am attaching a photo that I took early Sunday morning. The air was brisk and cool - the kind of air that feels good when it hits your lungs. I could see the fog lifting off the water from my balcony and had to walk down to get a shot of it. I normally do not shoot a lot of nature, but these shots make great wallpaper for my computers of which I rarely tire of seeing. These shots also remind me of just how quickly scenes appear and disappear in a blink. The way the bridge cuts across the frame makes it look like the right side is wider than the left. In fact, it is an optical illusion! The photo is actually a perfect rectangle!

Yikes!

Today is Friday, and I have somehow managed to spring back to life from some sort of sickness I must have contracted during the seminar. I came home and less than 24 hours later started getting chills and fever. Ouch! Needless to say, it has knocked me on my tail the rest of this week until today. I have survived and am back at the studio this afternoon after having to reschedule my sessions since Wednesday! Next week will be CRAZY!

LOADS of Fun!!!

Hello again to everyone! Wow...Fun with Bunnies is named that for a reason. We had LOADS of fun with all of the little clients despite last Saturday's snow. If I had to pick my favorite photo, I couldn't do it! The bunnies were real troopers this past week, so we have to give them a big salute and plenty of carrots! After all, we'd like them to come again next year...

This weekend is Spring Seminar for the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association, and we leave tonight. This is a neat weekend at Montgomery Bell State Park to hear speakers from other states share cool ideas.

We thank everyone who has called to schedule appointments the last few days. We have scheduled babies, toddlers, families, and bridal consultations. The word is getting out about our quality of work, so don't forget the referral program. Every client who sends us a new client gets a BONUS!

Ms. TN Senior America Pageant

We had a great time Saturday night at the Ms. TN Senior America Pageant held at Cumberland University here in Lebanon! Here you see a photo of the 2008 winner, Olivia Haley, from Nolensville. Olivia was stunning in her black fitted evening gown. She is being crowned by the 2007 Ms. TN Senior America, Yvonne Hunter.
I just want to also say thank you to all of the beautiful ladies who participated in the competition. Everyone was so genuinely kind and courteous; it was my pleasure meeting each one. We had a lot of fun getting some individual photos of each contestant in her cocktail dress before the pageant started.
Scott Graham from S.S. Graham Florals decorated the stage in silver and white crystals; it looked fantastic! If you are needing a great floral designer, Scott is located on W. Main Street next to Peking.

3x3 Mini Albums!

I have found the absolutely cutest way to show off the new additions to your family and friends! These adorable mini albums hold 20 3x3 photos, and they come in lots of great baby colors like pink, blue, green, etc. I have two studio samples available showing the entire first year for those who have children in this age group. They are very convenient and fit perfectly in a purse or diaper bag.

These albums would also be great in black as bridesmaids gifts after wedding day - or a wonderful gift idea for all the grandmas out there for Mother's Day!

Totally Unique and Artistic Frames Available!

You won’t find frames like these often! I had to take advantage of the offer when it was presented to me; I knew all of my Harper Photography customers would love, love, love these beautiful frames.

They are all painted wood and very large at 20”x20” in size. There are several colors and and inscriptions available. I am offering these at $75 each. This is super cheap because the people I am getting them from also sell them retail starting at $80. A lady this morning told me she saw similar frames at Christmas Village for over $100.

If you would like to get any of these frames, I have seven of them in stock right now. I can special order the others at no additional charge to you as long as I can get an order of 10 or more together!

Give me a call at 444.6322 or email me at tharper6311@charter.net if you are interested!

Spring is on its way!

Everyone should be getting their Fun with Bunnies cards in the mail by now. The event is scheduled for March 6-8 since Easter is early this year. Our cover girl is Madison; I could not resist the photo since her dress matched the set perfectly!

What else? I am working on getting a wedding album completed for Jesse Ashe Fish. We sat down a few weeks back and decided what photos she wanted in the album. It was hard to decide because they were all fantastic. Jesse and Derek will have one gorgeous album. They even had fireworks at the reception, so we got some really cool photos of them showing the couple in the foreground. I will be getting my own studio sample as well; when you stop by next time, remind me to show it to you!

My daffodils are starting to peep up from the earth! Thank goodness the winter has been gentle on us!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, and I hope Cupid pays everyone a visit! John treated me to a nice dinner tonight (we beat the crowds!). He is a super husband, and I have really been blessed to have him. I thank him so much for all of his support and love.

What's going on at the studio? I hand addressed all the Fun with Bunnies cards today, and I plan to mail them no later than Monday. This year I decided to do a discount if you bring a friend. There is no sitting fee with this special, so it is an awesome deal. Also, on another note, I got 2 calls today from people who had seen my galleries at belladonna and S.S. Graham. Wow! That is what I call great exposure!

Last night was the print competition at the Music City Professional Photographers Association meeting. Being able to keep up with the trends of where photography is going helps me keep up with the expectations of my clients. Several of the competition prints were spectacular! Seeing all of the beautiful prints keeps me aspiring to get better and better at my profession.

C Ya Next Time!

The Very Beginning

This is the first post of the Harper Photography blog. I hope everyone enjoys seeing what is going on with our business. Right now is the slow time for most photographers, so we are doing the necessities of keeping the business going like getting a new web site and creating new brochures. We just set up a gallery at the belladonna salon located on West Main on Monday. If you are a client there, check us out and pick up a special discount card. The offer is good until March 31.
